Ovarian Cancer Related to Talcum Powder Exposure

Recently, it is been disclosed that there is a likely link between talcum powder exposure and ovarian cancer. Studies published in some medical and scientific journals have found that talcum powder used in the genital area may result in the development of ovarian cancer. Documented evidence confirms that this has been known by the manufacturers of talcum products, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder, for many years. To this day, Johnson & Johnson denies any link to the use of talcum powder and the development of ovarian cancer. They, as well as other manufacturers, have chosen to forego any warnings on their advertising of these products.

The Foundation for Consumers (FFC) is requesting that a label warning should be used by the manufacturers to inform consumers of the risks associated with talcum powder and its possible link to ovarian cancer or fallopian tube cancer. Several recent cases confirm that the companies failed to inform consumers of the potential risks of talcum powder despite concerns that were known and disclosed by the American Cancer Society in 1999. The studies showing a link between talcum powder usage and ovarian cancer go back over 20 years. Several studies confirm that women who used talcum powder in the genital area have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer when compared to women who never used talcum powder.

Talc particles have been found in the ovaries of women who applied baby powder containing talc to the genital area and developed ovarian cancer. Scientific testing can confirm whether the ovarian cancer was caused by the talc through tissue sampling.

Lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturers of talcum powder products. These lawsuits claim that the product manufacturers advertised their products containing talcum powder as safe even though the manufacturers knew for decades that the products were not safe for women who applied them to their genital area.
